Household Safety Checks

A good rule of thumb is to use the “Change Your Clocks, Check Your Safety” reminder. Here are common household safety checks to perform when you change your clocks (spring and fall):

🔥 Fire Safety

  • Test smoke alarms and replace batteries if not sealed 10-year type.
  • Test carbon monoxide (CO) alarms and replace if expired (usually 5–7 years).
  • Check fire extinguishers – ensure they are charged, not expired, and easy to access.
  • Review your fire escape plan with everyone in the home; practice two ways out.

🏠 Home Safety

  • Check and replace HVAC filters to improve air quality and efficiency.
  • Inspect heating equipment (furnace, fireplace, space heaters) for safety.
  • Check the dryer vent and lint trap for any buildup that could cause a fire.
  • Inspect cords and plugs for fraying or damage.
  • Check home address numbers to make sure they’re visible from the street for emergency responders.

🚪 Emergency Preparedness

  • Update emergency contacts posted in the home and stored in your phone.
  • Check your first-aid kit and restock supplies.
  • Review family emergency plans (severe weather, power outages, etc.).

🌙 Nighttime Safety

  • Check flashlights and replace batteries.
  • Replace lightbulbs in stairways, halls, and outside for safe pathways.
